  • HTHSCI 4BL3 - Peer Tutoring in Design Thinking

    This course provides students an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge of design thinking by acting as peer tutors to other students enrolled in HTH SCI 4ID3: Innovation by Design, an introduction to design thinking.  Students will have an opportunity to support up to two interdisciplinary teams of students through a series of design project milestones.
    Developing skills and tools for facilitating a design mindset in others will serve as the focus of an individual and a team project.

  • HTHSCI 4BP3 - Bodies and Bodies Politic: From Public Health to Global Health

    This course explores the politics of health through the body, from public health to colonialism to transnational global health. The rights to health care originated at the national level, in political systems. We consider global health in historical perspective and what happens when pharmaceuticals and RCTs travel, with examples from North Africa, the Philippines, India, Doctors Without Borders, and the Middle East.

    Students will research the anatomy, surgical approach and etiology of a pathology assigned from an anatomical system of their choosing, depending on availability of cadavers. The goal is to give students an opportunity to prepare an educational surgical specimen from human materials.

    This course will enable interdisciplinary student groups to engage in design thinking as a methodology to assess health area problems/challenges, collect meaningful data, iterate alternative design options, and build a prototype solution for validation with user groups. Students will learn conceptual approaches to ‘design thinking’ and develop capabilities with spotting, supporting and scaling up new innovative ideas explored using a user-centered empathy focus.

    Student teams will apply design thinking methods and tools from Innovation by Design I to a
    local issue. Organizations will provide a real health-related challenge they are currently facing,
    and with the support of faculty, student teams will work directly with key stakeholders through
    the design process. Emphasis will be placed on practicing design thinking as a component of
    leadership skill development.

  • HTHSCI 4LD3 - Global Health Governance, Law and Politics

    This course surveys contemporary issues and debates in global health governance, law, and politics from an interdisciplinary perspective. Theory will converge with practice as students examine the historical development of global health, relevant actors and institutions, regulatory framework, principal coordinating mechanisms and emerging challenges to its effective governance.
