3 unit(s)

J. Richardson

This course addresses the epidemiological aspect of chronic disease such as life course accumulation of risk factors including both behavioural and environmental risk factors as well as non-modifiable risk factors. The management of chronic diseases from a primary, secondary and tertiary prevention perspective will examine the opportunities for rehabilitation to contribute to this management at each stage of prevention. Models used within the healthcare system to manage chronic diseases such as the chronic care model (CCM and the ECCM) and models of health behaviour developed to understand individuals’ lifestyle behaviour will be examined. Finally specific research issues around chronic disease will be addressed such as cohort studies, clinical trials for complex interventions.
