ANTHROP 2MA3 - Art and Activism 3 unit(s)
Why do people summon art to mobilize against violence and oppression? This course explores how is art has historically been summoned in activism, from opposing dictatorships in Latin America to present-day political movements, such as BLM, the #metoo movement, among others. We will study why people appeal to the arts to find shelter from or mobilize against racism, sexism, and political repression. This course builds on academic scholarship, podcasts, and films, and in-class interviews with invited guests. Prerequisite(s): Registration in Level II or above in any program Antirequisite(s): ANTHROP 3MA3 This course also includes experiential learning methods, e.g. in the form of museum visits; the creation of small exhibits, and so forth.
