An assessment of whether current political processes in developing countries, influenced as they are by the economic and political changes brought about by the globalization paradigm, have been able to overcome the view that economic development and Westernstyle democracy are doomed to failure. Still dominant development strategies, such as Modernization theories and the Dependency school, are critically re-examined, and complemented with a critical evaluation of ongoing democratic transitions processes.
