The literature on women and politics/gender and politics has grown at an exponential rate over the past fifteen years or so. This course will address some of this work, introducing students to a range of topics that may include: controversies in feminist theory; gender and citizenship (nationalism, colonialism, migration, multiculturalism); women’s movements; gender and public policy; gender in mass politics; women elites. The course will normally draw on theoretical and empirical research relevant to international relations, comparative politics, and public policy. Authors/text studied may include Nira Yuval-Davis, Anne Phillips, Susan Moller Okin, Shirin Rai, Cynthia Enloe, Judith Butler, Jean Bethke Elshtain, Sally Engle Merry, Ayelet Schachar, Ruth Lister, Birte Siim, Ali Mari Tripp, Joan Scott, Joni Lovenduski, Mona Lena Krook, Karen Beckwith, Georgina Waylen, Ann Orloff, Sylvia Bashevkin, Manon Tremblay, Mariette Sineau.
