This course will examine various Indigenous responses to the ways in which colonial nation-states have to subjugate Indigenous leadership and usurp Indigenous sovereignty as a means of accessing, controlling, and benefiting from Indigenous lands and resources. Through course readings, class discussions, student presentations, and research papers this course will explore issues such as treaty making, Indian Act, citizenship, identity, land claims, United Nations, self-government initiatives, and various policy developments. All the materials presented will be from Indigenous scholars allowing students to engage with Indigenous perspectives of Indigenous-State relations critically and thoroughly.
