INDIGST 3Q03 - Histories of Indigenous Sport, Performance, and Recreation 3 unit(s)
This course takes an historical approach to the study of sports, recreation, and performance as they intersect with issues of race, gender, class, international relations, and Indigenous sovereignty and nationhood. How have performance and sport been used to exploit, appropriate, trivialize, and stereotype Indigenous peoples on the one hand while also providing avenues for development, resurgence, and sovereignty on the other? This central question will be explored through the perspective of diverse Indigenous nations across Turtle Island.
3 hours; lecture and seminar: one term.
Prerequisite(s): Three units of Level II Indigenous Studies or permission of the Department.
