MATH 2XA3 - Vector Calculus I 3 unit(s)
An introduction to vector calculus, with an emphasis on proofs. Simple topology of R^n. Limits and continuity. Partial derivatives. Differentiability and continuous differentiability. Matrix chain rule. Curves and paths in R^n. Higher derivatives. Taylor approximation in R^n. Lagrange multipliers. Implicit and Inverse Function Theorems. Space curves, arc length, tangent, normal, curvature. Vector fields, flow lines, curl, divergence. Double integrals.
Three lectures, one tutorial; one term
Prerequisite(s): One of MATH 1AA3 , 1LT3 , 1XX3 , 1ZB3 , ARTSSCI 1D06 A/B , ISCI 1A24 A/B ; and credit or registration in one of MATH 1B03 , 1ZC3
Students who have completed MATH 1LS3 and 1LT3 should contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to discuss the recommended independent learning required to be successful in MATH 2XA3.
Not open to students with credit or registration in MATH 2MC3 , 2XB3 , or ISCI 2A18 A/B .
Not open to students with credit in MATH 2X03, 2XX3, 2XB3 , 2ZZ3 .
