Across North America, Queer histories are under attack, yet these acts of erasure are nothing new. This course aims to resist this wave of exclusion by examining the historical basis of sexual and gender divergence across North America, from early
colonial experiences of discovery and discipline to the emergence of wildly popular drag performances during the world wars, to an era of rights-based resistance. Lectures, readings and tutorial discussion will engage students with the rich literature on queer and trans history, linking local stories to regional, national, and transnational acts of resistance and existence.
