The School of Labour Studies offers an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Labour Studies. Both programs are offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The prime objective of the M.A. program is to introduce students to a variety of theoretical approaches and policy debates that relate to the question of working in modern societies - from working for wages in primary industrial and service settings, to the paid and unpaid work that goes on in the home and elsewhere. Regardless of the particular focus, work is to be studied as one component of a larger life experience that incorporates family life, community relations, gender and race relations, politics and state regulations. The Ph.D. program builds on the MA program by providing advanced training in Labour Studies theory and methods.
To facilitate the part-time option, Labour Studies core courses are held in the evening on a rotating basis. Nevertheless, it is likely that students wishing to pursue such a program may have to complete at least some of their courses during the day. There is a time limit of five years for completion of an M.A. part-time. Students who wish to change their status from part time to full time, must apply to the Graduate Studies Committee.
