Labour Studies

The School of Labour Studies offers an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Labour Studies. Both programs are offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The prime objective of the M.A. program is to introduce students to a variety of theoretical approaches and policy debates that relate to the question of working in modern societies - from working for wages in primary industrial and service settings, to the paid and unpaid work that goes on in the home and elsewhere. The Ph.D. program builds on the M.A. and provides advanced training in Labour Studies theory and methods. The Ph.D program prepares students for work in academia, public policy and/or advocacy. Both programs adopt an intersectional approach that highlights how colonialism, racism, and the sex-gender system structure work experience and worker agency.

To facilitate the part-time option, Labour Studies core courses are held in the evening on a rotating basis. Nevertheless, it is likely that students wishing to pursue such a program may have to complete at least some of their courses during the day. Students who wish to change their status from part time to full time, must apply to the Graduate Studies Committee in Labour Studies.
