Research in Chemical Engineering
The Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the most research-intensive chemical engineering departments in Canada with strong international recognition. The Department has research activities organized around four cluster areas, each supported by multiple faculty members and advanced infrastructure to enable world-class research:
- Polymer Materials and Manufacturing (modeling, processing, advanced polymer synthesis, polymer design, sustainable polymer materials, and applications)
- Process System Engineering (optimization, machine learning, advanced statistics, and scheduling, with a strong focus on industry-driven projects)
- Bioengineering and Biomaterials, including applications of engineering in medical fields (virology, biotherapeutics, drug delivery, tissue engineering/tissue models, and biomanufacturing)
- Water and Energy (environmental remediation, membranes, sorbents, catalysis, batteries, energy production, renewable energy, and energy systems)
The department hosts 4 Canada Research Chairs and multiple research centres, including:
- Centre for Advanced Polymer Processing & Design (CAPPA-D): a regional centre for polymer materials and manufacturing processes that is part of the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI)
- McMaster Advanced Control Consortium (MACC): an internationally renowned centre for process system engineering with strong connections with the chemical, process, and manufacturing sectors.
- C20/20 Innovation Hub: a research centre for biomaterials and therapeutics development for eye health.
- the Sartorius Bioprocess Automation Lab: a 1600 sq.ft. facility outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment opened in January 2025 advancing biomanufacturing technologies.
Our faculty members are also actively involved in the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research (BIMR), the Centre of Excellence in Protective Equipment and Materials (CEPEM), the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR), and other institutional centres of excellence providing collaborative access to advanced equipment and diverse expertise.
Most of our faculty members hold industrial partnership projects, offering students comprehensive training opportunities providing not only fundamental research skills but also experience in the real-world impact of their research. Close collaboration with industrial partners also provides students opportunities to hone professional skills such as time and project management, effective communication, teamwork, and networking, with many of these collaborating companies hiring students upon graduation.
