Program Information
Founded in 1965 and renamed in 2004, the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine offers leading programs in undergraduate, postgraduate, and graduate medical education. Clinical training is anchored at the McMaster University Medical Centre, part of Hamilton Health Sciences, and extends across affiliated hospitals and community health centres in Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo, and surrounding regions.
Undergraduate Medical Education
The mission of our undergraduate medical education program is to educate and inspire future physicians dedicated to the health and well-being of all. Upon successful completion, graduates are awarded the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, prepared to advance health care locally, nationally, and globally.
The academic program operates on an 11 months-a-year basis in first and second year, and 8 months in third year. and Students qualify for the MD degree at the end of the third academic year. The curriculum has been designed to involve medical students in a broad range of human health problems throughout their education and to prepare them for effective working relationships with patients, colleagues and society.
The program welcomes 217 students each year 32 of which are designated to each of the Waterloo Regional Campus and the Niagara Regional Campus. All applicants invited to the McMaster Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) will be asked to rank their site choice (Hamilton, Waterloo Region or Niagara Region) as 1, 2, 3 or no preference. Offers of admission to the medical school will be made from the master rank list irrespective of geographical preference. Subsequent to filling the 217 positions, registrants to the class will be offered a position based on their preference and geographical background.
The offer of admission is binding to a specific site.
Students accepted into the Waterloo Regional Campus and the Niagara Regional Campus will begin the curriculum in their home campus with some shared educational experiences in Hamilton. The costs associated with transportation and/or accommodation will be covered by the student. Each Regional Campus is approximately a one-hour drive from Hamilton.
