Admission Notes


  1. Completion of one of BIOPHYS 1S03 , MED PHYS 1E03 , PHYSICS 1B03 , 1L03  is required by the end of Level III. Effective, September 2014, completion of one of BIOPHYS 1S03 , MED PHYS 1E03 , PHYSICS 1B03 , 1C03 , 1L03  is required by the end of Level III. PHYSICS 1B03  or 1C03  is a prerequisite for BIOLOGY 2A03  and, therefore, completion in Level I is recommended. One of PHYSICS 1B03 , 1C03 , 1L03  is a prerequisite for LIFE SCI 3J03 .
  2. Completion of BIOLOGY 1A03 , 1M03 , and either PSYCH 1F03  or 1X03 , and 1XX3  is required by the end of Level II. 
  3. Completion of CHEM 1A03 , 1AA3  is strongly recommended in Level I as these courses are prerequisites for BIOLOGY 2B03 , BIOCHEM 2EE3  and CHEM 2OA3  and a wide selection of Biochemistry, Biology and Psychology courses. CHEM 1AA3  requires CHEM 1A03  as a prerequisite.
  4. Completion of ASTRON 1F03  (or PHYSICS 1F03 ) is strongly recommended.

Enrolment in this program is limited and possession of the published minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission is by selection but requires, as a minimum, completion of any Level I program with a Cumulative Average of at least 6.0 including:

Program Notes


  1. Registration in Honours Life Sciences (Origins Research Specialization) program does not guarantee access to all courses. Some courses have program restrictions and students are responsible to read course prerequisites carefully.
  2. Students may be required to complete more than 120 units if the appropriate courses were not completed in Level I.
  3. ORIGINS 2B03  and 2LU3  must be completed by the end of Level III. These courses should be completed in Level II when possible.
  4. Students should consider completing LIFE SCI 3RP3  in Level III in preparation for ORIGINS 4A09 A/B .
  5. Students who fail to meet the prerequisite for ORIGINS 4A09 A/B  will not be permitted to continue in the Origins Research Specialization. However, if appropriate requirements have been met, students may apply to graduate with the Minor in Origins Research.
  6. Level IV Research Seminar topics may change from year to year. Research Seminar topics and descriptions are available on the web site (http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/lifesciences) and from the Life Sciences office in late February of each year.  
  7. LIFE SCI 2G03  cannot substitute for BIOLOGY 2C03  or MOL BIOL 2C03  for prerequisite purposes.
  8. Completion of BIOLOGY 1A03 , 1M03 , and either PSYCH 1F03  or 1X03 , and 1XX3  is required by the end of Level II. 
  9. Students who entered the program prior to September 2013 may use BIOLOGY 3DD3  or LIFE SCI 3DD3 toward the Honours Life Sciences Course List requirement.
