Interdisciplinary Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies

The Interdisciplinary Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies is made up of courses spanning across more than a dozen departments. A Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies provides students with in-depth understanding of African and African-diaspora peoples and societies around the world.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units from the list below. No more than 6 units of Level 1 courses may be applied towards the completion of the Minor. Some of the courses below are cross-listed. It is the student’s responsibility to check carefully for prerequisites, co-requisites and enrolment restrictions of all courses in this list.

  1. Students who have previously completed INSPIRE 3EL3 where the topic was Topics in Black, African, and African Diaspora Studies, or related subject matter, may include this course toward the minor’s requirements.
  2. With the permission of the African and African Diaspora Studies committee, some courses not listed may be substituted, if deemed appropriate in content. Students seeking such permission should first contact Dr. Alpha Abebe (abebea@mcmaster.ca).
