Mathematics and Statistics Gateway

Admission

Prior to registration, Level I students must review the admission requirements of the Level II programs they are considering. Courses must be selected carefully to meet the admission requirements for entry to Level II of a specific program. For details of the various admission requirements see Faculty of Science program descriptions in this section of the Calendar. Students are also encouraged to review the McMaster Academic Planner (MAP) at www.mapsci.ca. Additionally, in late June and early July, Academic Advisors from the Office of the Associate Dean of Science (Academic) are readily available to provide Level I students with academic advice and registration assistance. To maximize the selection of Level II programs from the disciplines of Mathematics and Statistics, students should complete the courses recommended below.

Program Notes

  1. MATH 1A03  and 1AA3  or MATH 1LS3  and 1LT3  may be used as substitutions for MATH 1X03  and 1XX3  for consideration to Level II Mathematics and Statistics programs for students from other Level I programs. However, Mathematics and Statistics Gateway students are strongly discouraged from taking MATH 1LS3  and 1LT3  as they do not cover all content needed for MATH 2X03 .
  2. With the exception of COMPSCI 1TA3 , students may substitute a Level I Computer Science course for the 3 units required from the Faculty of Science.
  3. Completion of COMPSCI 1MD3  or MATH 1MP3  is required for admission to the Honours Mathematics and Computer Science program.
  4. Completion of ECON 1B03  and 1BB3  is required by the end of Level II for the Honours Actuarial and Financial Mathematics program. Completion in Level I is recommended.
  5. WHMIS 1A00 , a one-hour mandatory on-line Introduction to Health and Safety course, is a co-requisite to Level 1 courses with a lab component and must be completed prior to the first lab.
  6. BIOSAFE 1BS0 , a mandatory on-line introduction to bio-safety lab training, is a co-requisite to BIOLOGY 1A03  and must be completed prior to the first lab.
