Engaging, learning and working with and for diverse international communities provide students with essential skills and knowledge to be engaged citizens of the world. Latin American Studies is the interdisciplinary approach to explore the histories, linguistic traditions, literatures, cultures, societies, geographies, archaeologies, identities, migrations and diasporas of Latin America and its peoples. Latinx Studies is the interdisciplinary approach to exploring the histories, migration patterns, race and ethnicities, identity-formation, geographies, and experiences of the Latinx/Latin American communities inhabiting diasporic locations in Canada and elsewhere in the world. This course of study centres the multivalent experiences of Latin American people in Latin America and Latinx peoples within the context of the diaspora in Canada. The goal of the Minor in Latin American and Latinx Studies is to expose students to methodologies, knowledge, and theoretical frameworks for understanding “What is Latin America?” and “What are Latinx Studies?”

The primary responsibility for governance of the Minor is held by the Interdisciplinary Minor in Latin American and Latinx Studies Committee, comprised of an interdisciplinary group of faculty, administrators, and students from the Faculties of Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, Social Sciences, and the Arts & Science Program. Responsibility for advising each student rests with the student’s home Faculty. Student requests for course substitution can be completed by emailing the Minor Committee Co-Chair at latam@mcmaster.ca.
Students should note that not all courses listed are available each year. Furthermore, it is the student’s responsibility to check carefully for prerequisites, co-requisites, and enrolment restrictions.
Students are strongly encouraged to seek guidance from their academic advisor to ensure they are meeting all enrolment requirements, including Faculty-specific requirements for double counting courses required for a student’s major.
All courses have enrolment capacities. The Faculties cannot guarantee enrolment in courses for minors even when prerequisites have been met.
