Program Notes:
- Beginning at Level II, Economics students may complete one of the following program options in Economics:
- Honours Economics (B.A.)
- Honours Economics (Specialist Option) (B.A.)
- Honours Economics (Co-op Option) (B.A.)
- Honours Economics (Accelerated Option) (B.A.)
- Honours Economics and Mathematics (B.A.)
- Honours Economics and Computer Science (B.A.)
- Combined Honours Economics and Another Subject (B.A.)
- Economics (B.A.)
By default, students completing this Level I program will be considered for entry to Level II Honours Economics (B.A.), without needing to apply, provided they meet the required course grades and GPA requirements as stated for admission to that program. If students wish to be considered for any other Honours Economics program option or a non-Economics program, they must complete the Level II application form in April. Economics I students are encouraged to review the specific program requirements of all program options they are considering for Level II (https://economics.mcmaster.ca/undergraduate-programs/). In addition to the required Level 1 ECON courses, admission to Combined Honours programs also requires completion of the entry requirements for the other subject. For further information, see Applying for Admission to Level II Programs, in the Faculty of Social Sciences section of the Calendar. - Seats in the Level 1 Computer Science courses are limited. For those students in Economics 1 who hope to be eligible for admission to the Honours Economics & Computer Science program in Level II, the Department of Economics has a pre-registration ballot for a limited number of seats for COMPSCI 1JC3 and 1MD3 . Economics 1 students who are unsuccessful enrolling in these courses on their own may submit a ballot to the Department of Economics by July 1st. The ballot will be available on the Department of Economics website.
- Level I students considering the Honours Economics (Accelerated Option) program for Level II should review the recommended course selections for Year 1 of the accelerated timeline. The Accelerated Option is designed for ambitious students who aspire to expedite their careers in economics and graduate with an Honours Economics degree in three years. Economics I students interested in enrolling in this program option in Level II will need to follow a prescribed course enrollment sequence to be prepared for the compressed schedule of this program. They must also meet the specific course and GPA admission requirements for this program. All course prerequisites must be successfully met and requirements must be completed in the following sequence. (Failure to follow the sequence will result in traditional length of the degree). Successful completion will allow for Fall graduation in November of the respective year. Year 1 suggested order of courses: Fall term: ECON 1B03 , 1BB3 , 1ME3 and 2 Level 1 electives; Winter term: ECON 2B03, 2Z03, 2H03 (2Y03), 2 Level 1 electives; Spring term: 2 electives; Summer term: ECON 2ZZ3, 2HH3 (2YY3). Interested Level I students are strongly recommended to meet with an Academic Advisor for guidance.
