The Concurrent Certificate in Essential French is intended for those students seeking a solid foundation in essential French, including receptive linguistic skills (listening, reading, comprehension), and fundamental productive communication skills (speaking, writing). Students completing a degree program in French (Hons BA, BA, Minor) are not eligible for the concurrent Certificate in Essential French.
Certificate Requirements
Any student in an undergraduate degree program at McMaster may declare the certificate, at the time of graduation, and upon completion of the following courses in French.
Those students who begin their French Studies at McMaster with FRENCH 2Z06 A/B or FRENCH 2ZA3 and FRENCH 2ZB3 may complete the concurrent Certificate in Essential French, through fulfilment of the following alternate pathway.
*Students may replace FRENCH 2M06 A/B, FRENCH 2AA3 or FRENCH 2AB3 with equivalent language courses taken during the summer through the Explore program, or with other pre-approved exchange or study abroad courses. No more than 6 units of the Certificate, however, can come from non-McMaster courses.
The Department of French strongly recommends that an immersion experience be part of the work towards the certificate.
