Honours English and Cultural Studies (B.A.)

Admission


Completion of any Level I program and a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 including a grade of at least C in three units of Level I English.

Notes


  1. When registering, students should distribute their required English courses (See Requirements below) as follows: 
    • Level II: ENGLISH 2TP3  and 15 units of other Level II English 
    • Level III: 18 units of Level II and/or III English
    • Level IV: 9 units of Level II and/or III English; 9 units of Level IV English seminars. 
  2.  ​Students who are interested in taking ENGLISH 4X03  should contact the faculty member chairing the ENGLISH 4X03 committee early in the first term of Level IV.
  3. With permission of the Department, students may enroll in ENGLISH 4Y06 A/B S , 4Y03 , and/or 4YY3  in Level IV. Invitations to apply for ENGLISH 4Y06 A/B, 4Y03, and 4YY3 will be circulated to students in the second term of Level III. Students may complete a maximum of 6 units of practicum coursework toward their degree requirements. 
  4. Most graduate programs in English require proficiency in a second language. Students who plan to pursue graduate studies in English are strongly encouraged to include in their program a second language beyond the introductory level. 
  5. ENGLISH 3CR3  and 4CC3  are restricted to students accepted to the Concurrent Certificate in Creative Writing and Narrative Arts (CWNA)  and may not be taken for credit towards an English and Cultural Studies program. 
  6. Students considering a career in teaching are advised to take 6 units of Canadian courses many schools of education require this as part of the teachable admissions: ENGLISH 2C03 , 2CC3 , 2CL3 , 2KA3 , 3W03 
  7. The Faculty of Humanities introduced a new requirement for all Humanities degree students starting in 2024-25. The Skills for Life Concurrent Certificate comprises 18 units that provide a foundation for students to develop important academic and career-relevant skills such as oral and written communication, critical thinking, and digital literacy. The mandatory requirements below assume successful completion of HUMAN 1DL3 , HUMAN 1HL3  and HUMAN 1VV3  in Humanities 1. Students transferring to Humanities programs beyond Level 1 are exempt from the concurrent certificate. Please see Faculty of Humanities Academic Regulations for more information.

Students who entered Honours English and Cultural Studies (B.A.) prior to September 2024 should refer to the Undergraduate Calendar of their entry year and their individual advisement report for their program requirements.
