CMST 3PM3 - Public Memory, Media, and African Diaspora Studies

This course considers the role of public space and institutions in communicating and commemorating Black history and in fostering ongoing Black freedom struggles in Canada and the diaspora, including through museums, protest art, and historic site tourism. Core texts draw upon key scholarly debates in African Diaspora Studies and Media Studies. Topics may include Underground Railroad in Canada, #WetheNorth, BLM, Republic of New Afrika’s “Free the Land” campaign in the US South, and reparations organizing at the UN.
Three hours; one term
Prerequisite(s): Registration in Level III or above; and completion of CMST 1A03  or MMEDIA 1A03 or MEDIAART 1A03
