3 unit(s)

This land/water-based interdisciplinary and experiential course will join the Two Row on the Grand participants in a community-based and organized 10-day canoe paddle. The course will explore Indigenous and decolonizing theoretical knowledge, skills, and practices that are guided by the original peace treaty Deyohahage:gihę’gowahneh - Two Row Wampum between the Haudenosaunee and settler nations/communities working to live together in ways that are framed by the ethics of peace, friendship, and respect. The course will provide students with opportunities to understand the reality of Indigenous cultural knowledge and perspectives (ontology), the value or goodness of daily actions (axiology), and the way of knowledge or how we come to know by means of the natural environment and knowledge keepers (epistemology). Students will participate in learning and understanding cultural resurgence and reconciliation by paddling the river, enjoying meals, camping, cultural/educational teachings, storytelling, sharing circles, and forming friendships. Students will also consider environmental justice which is related to Earth centered approaches to relationships and accountability between people and people and the natural world.
