This course involves the critical analysis of representations of gendered violence drawn from visual culture, including documentary film, photography, visual and performance art, advertising, television, Hollywood cinema, and public monument. We will explore how feminist scholars, activists and cultural producers might intervene in visual cultures of gendered violence to analyze, contextualize, and produce examples of such culture that draw attention to the dangers of making gendered identities that conflate “female” with “victim” and “male” with “violence” pre-exist an act of violence itself.
