A research seminar exploring the role of astronomical activity within the cultural framework of a society. Students will choose a topic to examine, and trace the function, form, and impact of astronomy in that era. Discussion points will include astronomy in art and literature, the role of astronomers in social hierarchies, the development and use of instruments, astronomy and the built landscape, communicating astronomy, and the perception of astronomical topics by the general populace.
