PEACJUST 2XX3 - Social & Structural Determinants of Health

3 unit(s)

Social inequities often make it difficult for individuals, families, groups and communities to attain or maintain health. This class is designed to critically analyze the social and structural determinants that create health disparities. The social determinants of health include social identities that influence health outcomes, such as race, socio-economic status, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, and citizenship status. The structural determinants of health is a concept that considers how these social identities shape policies within our social structures that impact our social and economic well-being and health. Students will explore their own attitudes, beliefs and experiences around these determinants of health and acquire the knowledge and skills to influence and intervene on decisions, actions and policies that drive transformative health systems in Canada and globally.
Three hours; one term
